Title of dissertation: MULTIPLE ENERGY DISSIPATION STRATEGIES OF BASE ISOLATED STRUCTURES UNDER BLAST AND EARTHQUAKE Ruiyang Zhang, Master of Science, 2014 Dissertation directed by: Assistant Professor, Brian M. Phillips Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Terrorist attacks have become a growing threat worldwide in recent years. Explosive devices, the weapon of choice for a majority of terrorist attacks, significantly threaten civilian and military personnel. Accordingly it is very important to protect critical buildings against blast loads with the main goal of preventing loss of life of the occupants. The research detailed within this dissertation will investigate innovative smart structures, including the mitigation of damage and loss of life under blast loading through base isolated structures combined with supplemental passive control devices without compromising the innate seismic protection that base isolation provides. The focus of this dissertation is the development and simulation of multiple control strategies for multistory structures subjected to surface blasts and seismic excitations. The goal is to study and improve the response of base isolated structures under blast loadings and simultaneously keep the same level or better performance under earthquakes through alternative energy dissipation systems. Nowadays, with the increase of the terrorist attacks around the urban places, the building design under the blast loadings is of primary considerations, especially for some important buildings and vital arteries. When an explosion occurs, the blast waves can cause severe damage to the structure and endanger the lives of people. Since the existing steel structures are usually designed for the ty...

Assessment of Subsurface Explosion caused by Tunnel Construction in Urban Areas

Nowadays, tunneling in urban areas is a common activity for a variety of transportations such as subways, water supply, lifelines andsewers that may require blast operations. The characteristics of stress waves of the blast are quite different from earthquake waves. The blast waves are usually of high frequency content, short duration, equality of amplitudes in horizontal and vertical direction...

Innovative Techniques for Assessing the Behavior of Collapsing Structures

Computer analysis of structures has traditionally been carried out using the displacement method combined with an incremental iterative scheme for nonlinear problems. In this paper, a Lagrangian approach is developed, which is a mixed method, where besides displacements, the stress-resultants and other variables of state are primary unknowns. The method can potentially be used for the analysis ...

Review of Various Clustering Methods Used To Ca - tegorize Seismic Data into Earthquake and Mining

Earthquake mainly produces Pand Swave at the point of occurrence. Mining site that mines the geological material from earth often makes the quarry blasts on the surface of earth to accelerate the mining process instead of drilling. This mining blast also causes the same wave as the earthquake. It is very difficult to differentiate between two of them as the characteristics of waves produced by ...

Non-linear Analysis of Multi-hazard Performance of Cylindrical Concrete Filled Steel Tubes Bridge Piers

Advanced finite element techniques are used to investigate the multi-hazard (earthquake and blast) performance of Concrete-Filled Steel Tubes (CFSTs) and Concrete Filled Double Skinned Tubes (CFDSTs) for bridge engineering applications. Specimens of both sections are analyzed using the finite element package LS-DYNA under similar seismic and blast loading. First, behavior of CFSTs recorded in s...
